kaveh's glares have never worked on him anyway. their kiss is thrown off-kilter by alhaitham's smirk, still pulling on his lips. his arms sink down and wrap around kaveh's waist, urging him forward as close as he can be (because he can't be assed to step forward).
when he finally softens his mouth, he closes kaveh's lips with his own and tries to follow with a string of long kisses, deep and full and languid, like he's making up for what he ruined. if kaveh lets him, alhaitham would be content to kiss him this way for hours. there's no better day to do so than on valentine's day, after all. ]
[Alhaitham is so lucky that Kaveh's too full of shame to bite him because that smirk is just asking for it tbh.
But unfortunately for Kaveh, he's just as weak to this as he was earlier. Moreso now, actually, because his heart is a complete mess. No matter what he says, he knows it's not the first meaningful thing Alhaitham's ever done for him--but he was able to look away from so many of those, because they were never so blatant. And more importantly, back then, Alhaitham always let him run, always gave in and permitted him to skirt around sincerity, skittish and defensive in his fearful longing. (And that, too, was meaningful in its own way.)
The point being: It's not Alhaitham's first poignant gesture, but it's one of the first between them as they are now, and that alone would've been enough to turn him indulgent. For these gifts to be so sentimental, so well-chosen on top of everything else--there's simply no way he can deny Alhaitham right now. That would've been true the minute he opened the box no matter what, even if he hadn't stuck his foot in his mouth on the way.
So it should come as no surprise that he lets Alhaitham tug him forward, lifting his other hand to bury his fingers in Alhaitham's hair (careful, of course, not to dislodge his headphones). It should be utterly predictable that he leans into Alhaitham, that he keeps his lips parted and welcomes each and every kiss. If anyone comes knocking on the door, Kaveh might try to break away to answer it, but other than that? Alhaitham just might get what he wants, since Kaveh doesn't seem inclined to stop him.]
[ kaveh trying to answer the door for an office that isn't even his.... good luck getting out of alhaitham's arms if that happens. whoever it is should have come during office hours!!!
kaveh indulges him, returning every kiss with equal fervor. they stay like this for a few more minutes, where alhaitham revels in the sweetness of kaveh's mouth, dipping his tongue past kaveh's lips to slip over his. it would be easy to draw them up against his desk or on his chair, continue until their lips feel raw like he wants them to, but instead he slowly (and hopefully briefly) draws back.
he sidles his nose beside kaveh's, and his lips curl in a thin smile. ]
[LOOK he knows Alhaitham wouldn't do it and one of them has to make a token effort at being responsible, maybe, perhaps. Never mind that Alhaitham's gonna get his way about the all-nighter he forbade earlier too--but that's just because as soon as Kaveh leaves he's gonna work nonstop until Alhaitham gets off work and finish it out of spite. Kaveh may scoff at the titles and praise he gets but that doesn't mean they're unearned.
He scowls at Alhaitham's words when they break apart, but it's not the same offended bristling as earlier; he's just being dramatic. His face is still warm, but at least now it's partly from affection and not mortification. Tiny victories.]
Why do I put up with you? --Don't answer that. [ALHAITHAM HAS SAID ENOUGH. But for all of Alhaitham's irritating smugness, Kaveh is the one who's claimed time and again to be good at this (at least between the two of them), so... fine. He will suck it up and set a good example... and meet Alhaitham with the straightforwardness he so prefers, the way Alhaitham's gone out of his way to do this for him. He takes a steadying breath, something that would probably look like a sigh if they were standing further apart.]
...Yes. They're perfect, thank you. [He glances down again, eyes catching on the book once more. He unwinds one arm from Alhaitham, reaching out to rest his fingertips on the cover.] ...We should read these, later tonight.
[It's basically asking for a spirited debate, considering their fundamentally opposed perspectives--but maybe Kaveh knows perfectly well that that's their love language, so sue him.]
[ what if alhaitham just leaves work early so he can steal kaveh for the rest of the night. what then. they deserve some time off and now he has an actual sugar daddy. (no)
his smile quirks upward even further when kaveh quickly corrects himself. all of kaveh's retorts and attacks are watered down every time he blushes; a softness reaches his eyes that only alhaitham can read. he follows his hand to the book, and he has the same thought: that night, instead of visiting the tavern, they'll settle on the couch after alhaitham opens a bottle of his best vintage wine. they'll pick apart every poem, ruminate and debate on its broken prose and hidden meanings, but in a good-natured way that they sometimes do. it will be perfect. maybe they should leave early. ]
If that's what you want. I didn't think you'd want to open up a can of worms tonight of all nights.
[ he tilts his head, lets his lips graze kaveh's cheek bone before pressing a kiss there. ]
Yes, well... [Listen... maybe he knows it would make Alhaitham happy and also what if that's exactly what he wants and it sounds perfect to him too he just doesn't want anyone to see them together on a romantic holiday!! Yeah! That's totally it.] You went through the effort of getting it, so I might as well teach you how to appreciate it.
[Ah well. Baby steps. They'll get there eventually. In the meantime, he leans back and lifts a hand to press two fingers to Alhaitham's lips with a stern look.]
Oh no you don't. You stay here and finish your shift like the absurdly overpaid employee you are. [Someday he'll stop being salty about their paycheck differences but today is not that day] I'll head to the studio now, and if no one disturbs me, I should be able to finish by the time you're done.
[Alhaitham can choose between letting him cram a full day's worth of work into the next like 5 hours, or letting him pull a third all-nighter and sleep for like 16 straight hours after. There is no in-between, he's gonna destroy himself now or later.]
): but what if alhaitham feels lazyyy... in reality, haitham would normally be stubborn and insistent on his stern and calculated way, but he knows how kaveh is about his work. the cramming will happen no matter what. haitham may as well take the path of least resistance.
so despite his irritated look, alhaitham gives in. he reaches for kaveh's hand and holds it still as he kisses his two fingertips. ]
Fine. You can go. Just not now.
[ kaveh wasn't asking for permission..... but haitham doesn't seem preoccupied with this. he just draws kaveh's hand back and kisses the front of his curled fingers. that arm around his waist vaguely tightens. ]
[HE'S ALWAYS LAZY. HE'S JUST A GIANT HOUSECAT WHO'S TOO ATTRACTIVE FOR HIS OWN GOOD.]
What's that supposed to mean? I wasn't asking permission, you know.
[He'll say it!!! He'll grumble it... even though he's not disentangling himself just yet, his other hand still comfortably resting on the back of Alhaitham's neck. They've been spiritually married for like 10 years but they haven't been dating for that long, and even if they had been, Kaveh is such a sucker for affection. No--for Alhaitham's affection, specifically. Alhaitham's not nearly as reserved with it as he first expected, but that doesn't make the weight of it any easier for his heart to bear.
(It's... nice, after all. To know, without a doubt, that he's wanted. Maybe it's the reassurance just as much as it is the rest of it.)]
[ yeah... he even acts like he owns the place (bc he does)
for as much as alhaitham's physical affection can be genuine, it definitely can be a tactic. sometimes it doesn't work; kaveh will shove a him away by his shoulders or cover his mouth, citing deadlines or his workload or any other priorities. other times, like now, kaveh shows his weakness, and alhaitham indulges kaveh as much as he indulges himself.
kaveh's will to protest begin to slacken. haitham takes his hand and presses it over one half of his own chest. a dirty trick.
he leans in to kiss lightly along the line of kaveh's jaw. then he noses underneath it, tilting kaveh's head to close his mouth against the side of his neck. he slowly sucks a bruise onto his skin, holding flesh between his teeth. ]
[IT'S TRUE... EVEN AT WORK BECAUSE HE'S STILL THE ACTING GRAND SAGE, HATEFUL.
That's the dirtiest of tricks, though, wow?? DON'T WEAPONIZE YOUR TITS YOU JERK. Unfortunately, it works; Kaveh, who was about to call Alhaitham out for not answering him, loses track of his complaint.]
You really don't dress like someone who hates attention, you know. [Muttered, a little teasing, as he lets his fingers splay over Alhaitham's chest. He's already got the shape of him memorized, of course, but people aren't buildings; they change by the day, and Kaveh always enjoys sussing out even the most minute shifts.
Thoughtlessly--forgetting exactly where they are, perhaps--he angles his head, savoring the languid press of Alhaitham's lips to his skin. Normally, he'd be a little less indulgent, but... he's tired, and it's a holiday. It won't kill him to let his boyfriend kiss him for a few minutes before he goes back to work.
Or so he thinks, until he feels Alhaitham leaving a mark on his neck. Where people might see. Immediately, his nails dig into the back of Alhaitham's neck and his chest.]
You--! [Alhaitham is so lucky he wears a high collar and has long hair or he would be DEAD MEAT]
but that gets him to slowly and cooly pull away, before he ends up biting a chunk out of kaveh's neck by accident. he doesn't seem fazed by kaveh's reaction, merely licking his lips clean and thumbing away a red droplet on his lower lip. he can taste a little bit of copper at the ends of his canines. does he care? no. ]
I didn't know that you were taken by this sort of thing. I'll have to remember that.
[the WORST is what he is HMPH!! His face is a little red again, but he immediately slaps a hand over his neck, ignoring the twinge of sensitivity as he tries to wriggle out of Alhaitham's hold.]
You're dead if this gets me in trouble, do you hear me? Dead!
[It's UNPROFESSIONAL he will DIE OF MORTIFICATION and then he'll have to come back as a vengeful ghost and haunt Alhaitham for the rest of forever and that's just unproductive for both of them]
Unfortunately for Alhaitham, Kaveh does out-stubborn him and wriggle his way to freedom--but he at least stays close by, turning back to his gift to put the lid back on it and carefully ease the ribbon back into place. He might not remember his keys but he will remember to take this with him!!! And his other gifts too, which he and Alhaitham can enjoy together because anything else would be wasteful.]
I don't want to hear that from a man who's never worked with clients a day in his life.
You're forgetting that I was the Acting Grand Sage. Technically I had clients all over the Akademiya, even if it was just for a little while.
[ it was terrible. how does kaveh even live with this.
if kaveh even lets him, alhaitham will lightly lay his hands on the sides of kaveh's lean waist. he'll walk forward and tuck his chin over kaveh's shoulder, with blond hair tickling over his chin and cheek. he closes his eyes. ]
At least now you won't be getting those gifts anymore.
[He does allow it--mostly because if he truly needs to pry Alhaitham off of him and leave, he can just summon Mehrak and whack Alhaitham upside the head with it.]
That's not even remotely the same thing--
[and you know it is where that sentence was going, but he freezes as the rest of Alhaitham's words sink in.
Slowly, incredulously, he turns his head.]
Don't tell me you were jealous.
[That would mean... there really was something weird in Alhaitham's reaction earlier? that he was right about that sharpness he picked up on??
I'm jealous of everyone else in this building that has a clean entryway.
[ more than being jealous of any others, there is some satisfaction in leaving his mark on kaveh in general. he likes seeing reminders of what they'd done before. ]
To do what, exactly? Crush any semblance of civility you may give off into ashes so that no one dares to assume you're human?
[GOD. This is why Alhaitham drives him crazy.
The kiss makes him sigh, though. Normally he would do nothing more than roll his eyes and leave it at his complaints. He would expect Alhaitham to volley back at him, to fall into their usual pattern; one that's comforting in its familiarity even when it makes him want to tear his hair out in frustration. He would do just as he'd done earlier--brush off any hint of Alhaitham exposing an excess of emotion, reject the suggestion of Alhaitham behaving irrationally, and do his best not to work himself up into a spiral of anxiety over the true depth of Alhaitham's feelings for him. (After all, they miscommunicate so often in their own ways, even now.)
...But Alhaitham has already behaved irrationally today. There's undeniable proof of that in his hand, right at this moment. He'd said, in no uncertain terms, that he did this simply because he knew Kaveh would like it; had seemed offended--at least by Alhaitham standards--that Kaveh would even dare to suggest someone else put the idea in his head. Even Kaveh, who still has difficulty believing that this is, that they are real, can only look away from so much.
Gently, he nudges Alhaitham's head off of his shoulder so that he can turn in Alhaitham's loose hold, facing him. Shifting the box to one hand, he places the other on Alhaitham's cheek.]
First of all, for all your flaws--of which there are many--you are an intelligent man, and it's absurd that I must spell this out for you. [Was that a compliment or not??? Unclear.] But since you are selectively deaf when it suits you, let me say this clearly, while I know you're listening. [He pauses for a moment, searching Alhaitham's gaze.] Even if you're right about those other gifts--it doesn't matter what anyone else's intentions were. I want to keep them because I want to share them with you. I know I-- [He falters slightly, here, but with a steadying breath, he forges on.] --I may not... always make it clear. But I'm not ashamed of you, or embarrassed of being with you.
[He'd never wanted to hide his association with Alhaitham himself, even before they finally admitted to the feelings that had built up between them over the years. Even when they'd clashed fiercely, some part of Kaveh never stopped worrying for Alhaitham's isolation; he'd never minded being seen together in public, especially because there was always the chance it helped other people understand that Alhaitham was not some terrifying, unapproachable machine.
No, his shame, his paranoia, has always been self-focused. In the end, he simply cares too much--and that's doubly true for his work. The idea of people gossiping about how he'd crawled back to Alhaitham at his lowest moment is embarrassing, yes, but it could also damage his credibility, and that is far, far more important. Kaveh has always been bold and proud in some ways, but that doesn't change the fact that he's dedicated his life to pleasing others, to housing their memories and crafting their most precious spaces. He can't do that if people don't trust him.
Alhaitham doesn't understand that, he knows. Perhaps he never will. But Kaveh cannot simply stop caring, the way Alhaitham has.
...But even so. There are some things Kaveh won't back down on, and this is one of them.]
I chose you. And against all common sense, I will continue to choose you.
[It's not like he thinks Alhaitham is suddenly insecure. But he knows very well that emotions don't always make sense, and it can't possibly hurt to provide reassurance, even if it's unnecessary.]
[ alhaitham had spoken the truth. if he wanted to convey his jealousy or assert his possession of kaveh, he would have been entirely upfront about it. kaveh would be rightly taken aback by it, and it would need to be something discussed and taken seriously. alhaitham isn't above unfair maneuvers and ulterior motives, but in this case, what reason was there to lie to kaveh? why would he be ashamed of telling him the truth?
like kaveh surmised, there's no underlying insecurity. if anything, there's only the blithe acceptance of one fact: if kaveh was angry with him and/or decided to break up with him, alhaitham would relent despite any of his emotions on the subject. it's not in his nature to keep someone from doing what's best for their wellbeing. kaveh was as bright as the sun, altruistic and beloved. this was another part of kaveh that alhaitham loved, even if he's never said it allowed. he would never try to change that fact.
anyway. alhaitham had bitten him for three reasons:
it would be fun
it would piss kaveh off (even if he's apparently into it)
it would keep kaveh's gifts off of his lawn.
kaveh understands it differently. while he speaks and settles his hand on alhaitham's cheek, alhaitham still listens obediently. as for kaveh's many insults, alhaitham only smiles back, clearly unintimidated.
that smile drops away soon enough. what kaveh tells him by the end sinks deeply into him, softening his eyes and loosening his levity. he had been messing around until this point, but to hear that he is something kaveh takes pride in, hearing a promise from kaveh that he will always be chosen—even his own pragmatism can't stop his heart from swelling with affection and hope. this is how he knows he's in love.
alhaitham raises his hand and settles it over the one at his cheek. he kisses the middle of kaveh's palm. ]
I could say the same for you. [ he looks back at kaveh as he strokes his thumb over his knuckle. ] I don't believe in promises for things to last forever. Our lives are too unpredictable for that. Even so, I want you to keep that promise. I have no plans to stop choosing you either. Not after how long we've both waited for this.
[ he lowers both of their hands to their sides. with the other, he slips his fingers over the nape of kaveh's neck and leads them into a deep, meaningful kiss. ]
[LOOK... LISTEN!!! Maybe Kaveh just wanted to believe that Alhaitham was having Feelings for once in his ding-dang life, no matter how unlikely it is. This is just one of many forms of his emotional irrationally that Alhaitham tends to find so perplexing; his stubborn belief in Alhaitham's emotions, in contrast to his constant (albeit only half-serious) accusations that he has none.
Alhaitham doesn't argue or correct him, and he's glad for it. He doesn't want to hear that he was incorrect. Not anymore, today, and certainly not right now. He would much rather do exactly this: feel Alhaitham's cool lips on his warm hand, meet that sharp gaze that's been blunted with affection, and bask in the words that as close to what he wants to hear as they will ever get.
And, honestly--he prefers it this way. It's not as if he'd complain about flowery declarations or romantic gestures, but... this? Hearing I have no plans to stop choosing you, and knowing that it's the complete and utter unwavering truth? Nothing can compare to that. It's the grounding counterpart to his flights of fancy--somewhere to land whenever his wings melt from the heat of the sun.
He tilts his head as Alhaitham dips forward--he knows his angles, after all, and this is one he immediately memorized. He keeps his lips parted, pliant, his free hand slipping down to stroke over Alhaitham's side and settle at his waist.]
What do you take me for? Of course I'll keep it. [It's grumbled, but insincere, and he follows it up with another slow, deep kiss to counter his own words.]
...Five minutes. Do as you will. [That's the most he can concede before he really, truly has to leave if they have any intention of spending the evening together. It's far more generous than he'd normally permit, all things considered.]
[ while they kiss, alhaitham runs his fingers up into the stream of kaveh's hair, tucking his fingertips just beneath the clips and braids. the other hand settles over kaveh's bicep, silently beseeching that kaveh keeps hold on his side. the warmth of it seeps easily past the thin fabric of his shirt, as it always does against alhaitham's colder skin. for a small while after they'd (finally) consummated their feelings, the sensation of kaveh's hands on him was unfamiliar almost to the point of discomfort, conflicting with the side of him that wanted them everywhere. needless to say, one feeling overwhelmed the other soon enough.
kaveh's voice tickles against his lips, and his kiss ripples through his body. five minutes. eyes closed, alhaitham breaks their kiss with a snide smile. he won't tell kaveh that he kept him here only to leave that mark on his neck. kaveh gave him five more minutes, and he's using them to the fullest. ]
I will then.
[ alhaitham kisses him again, and this time he presses his body flush to kaveh's. with enough gentle force, and with kaveh's permission, he'll ease him up against the edge of his desk. his tongue gently prods between their mouths, warm and slippery as it pushes against kaveh's.
he drops his hands and blindly slips them past the scarves around kaveh's hips. it might be clear where he's going with this—and if it seems uncannily forward of him, kaveh would be right about that. ]

[It's UNPROFESSIONAL he will DIE OF MORTIFICATION and then he'll have to come back as a vengeful ghost and haunt Alhaitham for the rest of forever and that's just unproductive for both of them]

alhaitham will be a little stubborn and keep his hands locked around kaveh's waist. if he really doubles down, though, he'll let him go. ]
How would that get you in trouble? You wouldn't lose any business. You're too valuable for that.

[ yeah. that's what this was about. ]

???¿¿¿???]

I'm jealous of everyone else in this building that has a clean entryway.
[ more than being jealous of any others, there is some satisfaction in leaving his mark on kaveh in general. he likes seeing reminders of what they'd done before. ]

You are the most absurd man I've ever met.

Why? It works.
don't mind me cobbling together characterization with elmers glue and macaroni
But he knows very well that emotions don't always make sense, and it can't possibly hurt to provide reassurance, even if it's unnecessary.]
puts it in my mouth
like kaveh surmised, there's no underlying insecurity. if anything, there's only the blithe acceptance of one fact: if kaveh was angry with him and/or decided to break up with him, alhaitham would relent despite any of his emotions on the subject. it's not in his nature to keep someone from doing what's best for their wellbeing. kaveh was as bright as the sun, altruistic and beloved. this was another part of kaveh that alhaitham loved, even if he's never said it allowed. he would never try to change that fact.
anyway. alhaitham had bitten him for three reasons:
- it would be fun
- it would piss kaveh off (even if he's apparently into it)
- it would keep kaveh's gifts off of his lawn.
kaveh understands it differently. while he speaks and settles his hand on alhaitham's cheek, alhaitham still listens obediently. as for kaveh's many insults, alhaitham only smiles back, clearly unintimidated.that smile drops away soon enough. what kaveh tells him by the end sinks deeply into him, softening his eyes and loosening his levity. he had been messing around until this point, but to hear that he is something kaveh takes pride in, hearing a promise from kaveh that he will always be chosen—even his own pragmatism can't stop his heart from swelling with affection and hope. this is how he knows he's in love.
alhaitham raises his hand and settles it over the one at his cheek. he kisses the middle of kaveh's palm.

It's far more generous than he'd normally permit, all things considered.]

kaveh's voice tickles against his lips, and his kiss ripples through his body. five minutes. eyes closed, alhaitham breaks their kiss with a snide smile. he won't tell kaveh that he kept him here only to leave that mark on his neck. kaveh gave him five more minutes, and he's using them to the fullest.
