[This time, it is not Wei Wuxian who Lan Sizhui stumbles upon alone tending farmland and forcing him to stir a pot. It's Lan Wangji. Not that he had been trying to avoid the man for any particular reason. But he is caught red-handed bringing a gift that may have gotten him scolded if he was at Cloud Recess.
He really should have hidden it within his sleeves; (un)fortunately, he is a good boy. So for now, it's only a small pouch of something tied up with string. He doesn't try to conceal it from Lan Wangji when he approaches; it would be terrible Lan manners to not own up to very obvious deeds.
There is no greater weight than Lan Wangji's disappointment.
He simply continues to hold the pouch in one hand while giving a small bow of greeting to Lan Wangji.] Hanguang-jun. [Very different from the "gege" he use to say while clinging to a leg, but well-mannered regardless.]
I'm sorry for interrupting unexpectedly.
[He has in this moment taken to Dadji's way of, rather than lying, just not saying anything at all...]
I can't believe sizhui's bringing drugs to this fine establishment
[The image of "Hanguang-jun" isn't something Lan Wangji ever intentionally cultivated (hah). Still, there must be something in the way he carries himself, because no matter how often he does casual tasks like fieldwork or laundry, Wei Wuxian acts like he can't believe his eyes. Indeed, if Sizhui had approached earlier in the day, he likely would've seen Wei Wuxian rolling around on the steps, calling out outrageous comments about how "even the harvests are at the beck and call of the great Hanguang-jun, and it's a good thing you don't hunt, Lan Zhan, any prey would simply lie down and wait for you, aiyo--"
--ANYWAY, it's a good thing Sizhui came later. Wei Wuxian's nowhere to be seen, but Lan Wangji's sitting out front, a pile of potatoes next to him. He doesn't seem to mind the dirt on his white clothing, simply sorting through the potatoes with the same calm expression he always wears, like checking for rotten vegetables requires the same level of careful diligence as anything he ever does as a cultivator.
There's no surprise on his face when he looks up and nods at Sizhui, but there's a warmth in his eyes. DADJI IS HAPPY TO SEE HIM. He's always happy to see Sizhui; as a teacher and a role model, he's done his best to be impartial, but that isn't expected of him out here.]
Sizhui. [HELLO SON. Lan Wangji's gaze moves to the pouch--he doesn't ask about it (yet), but he isn't going to act like he doesn't see it, either. There's no reason to be suspicious, and he's not in the habit of making assumptions anyway.] You are always welcome here.
[Sizhui thinks it is very endearing when Lan Wangji carries on with everything the same way he does as a cultivator. Lan Wangji is very honest this way, never changing who he is to please anyone. Sizhui admires that!
The warm eyes gets Sizhui to smile, and he hurries by where Lan Wangji is sitting to go inside the little house. He should have knocked, honestly, but he knows if Wei Wuxian was here, the man would have broken the door down rushing out to tease him.
Just inside, he places the small pouch down before returning to Lan Wangji again empty-handed. Wow, Sizhui loves all of these potatoes.]
You have so many today, Hanguang-jun! Let me help you.
[HE IS VERY HONEST. He is sometimes too honest. It's fine.
Sizhui's right, though; the inside of the house is very clearly lived-in, but it looks tidy, which means Wei Wuxian's probably been gone for a little while. Lan Wangji cleans up after the tornado, but even he can't get things this organized unless Wei Wuxian's just totally out of the house... god. When Sizhui returns, Lan Wangji makes a small gesture, indicating where he can sit to join in with this RIVETING TASK.]
Mm. Wei Ying made adjustments to the soil. [He doesn't mind manual labor, but he doesn't relish working the earth the way Wei Wuxian does, so he mostly leaves the tinkering to his husband and just goes where he's pointed when it comes to this.] He will be back this evening. We will cook them with scallions.
[Can you eat potatoes right after harvesting them I have no idea and I don't have time to check BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY congrats Sizhui you're staying for dinner.]
[This is fine. Sizhui images the great Hanguang-jun putting away some scrolls, turning to fix something else, and Wei Wuxian bounding up eagerly and grinning with the scrolls just corrected in his arms.]
That sounds very good. [PIXI I'M IN TEARS. Yeah, just scrub them. Sizhui and Lan Wangji will definitely scrub them in some water before letting Wei Wuxian near them, if at all.] Perhaps I should hold onto what I brought until after then.
[He takes up a seat beside Lan Wangji, carefully folding the sleeves of the white robe back even though this isn't going to spare either of them from dirty potatoes. He gets right to work, though, because he is a good boy.]
[STOP MY POTATOES!!! But he nods in response to Sizhui's comment; if Sizhui wishes to wait, that's fine with him. The chances of someone coming to fetch them for help with some incident or another is... well, it's not impossible, but it's unlikely. They have plenty of time, a luxury Lan Wangji doesn't ever take for granted.
SIZHUI IS SUCH A GOOD BOY THOUGH. Look at him, working hard!! Lan Wangji doesn't say anything about it, but he's relaxed as he works, which is the next best thing.]
Wen Qionglin did not accompany you today. [It's an observation, a little quiet curiosity without pressure. Lan Wangji's relationship with Wen Ning has largely settled over the years, which he knows has greatly pleased Wei Wuxian, but Wen Ning has his own life, and is certainly under no obligation to report back to them.]
no subject

[Come, sit, sort potatoes.]
